SOCIO-DEMOGRAPHIC AND BEHAVIORAL CHARACTERISTICS AMONG HOSPITALIZED SUICIDAL PATIENTS IN JHENAIDAH SADAR HOSPITAL OF BANGLADESH

Abstract: Suicide is a public health crisis in Bangladesh. The present work was aimed at finding out the socio demographic and behavioral characteristics of suicidal patients hospitalized in the Jhenaidah Sadar hospital in Bangladesh. A total of 300 selected patients were interviewed and their prescriptions have been observed. The data were recorded into a data collection form of the study with confidentiality. The patients (36%) were trying to commit suicide preferably during the middle of the day. The highest patients (66.67%) choose poisoning as a method of suicide. Family confliction (54.67%) was the major reason for doing self-harm. At the time of suicide, vomiting (63.33%) was the most common symptoms among the patients. Suicide remains a serious cause of mortality worldwide. At present, a small number of research study have been conducted on suicide in Bangladesh. This survey work tries to find out the suicidal scenario of hospitalized patients in a district level government hospital in Bangladesh.
